Dental Care for Children with Special Needs

Special Needs Dentistry

If you’re the parent or caregiver of a child with special needs, you know how challenging a trip to the dentist can be — for both you and your youngster. Whether you have a toddler or a preteen, you can rest assured that our caring Spokane Valley pediatric dental team is committed to being a partner with you in the care of your child.

A Compassionate Staff That is Attentive to Your Child

Why should you bring your child to a dentist with experience in treating patients with special needs? At KidSmile Dental, it’s because we offer…

  • A relaxed, caring environment that provides you and your child with the patience and attention necessary for addressing unique health situations
  • Experience treating children with developmental, emotional, and physical disabilities
  • Safe and comfortable sedation dentistry to efficiently care for children that may not be able to sit for a traditional treatment appointment
  • In-house care, so that it isn’t always necessary to complete treatment in a hospital or surgical center

Extra Care for Extra Special Patients

When you call our Spokane Valley pediatric dental office for the first time, be sure to let us know of any special accommodations that may need to be made. We’ll work closely with you to schedule the appointment at a time where your child tends to be most relaxed (usually first thing in the morning.)

If it helps, you can visit our office to take your child on a “tour” and meet the staff before the actual day of the appointment.

The more information you share with us, the better we can serve your family. You know your son or daughter better than anyone else. As our dentist and staff listen to this information, we are able to adapt the way we care for your child in a way that’s as positive of an experience as possible.

Some of the patients that our dentist sees are children with:

  • Down Syndrome
  • Cleft Lip and Palate
  • ADHD/ADD
  • Emotional Trauma
  • Spina Bifida
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Cognitive or Developmental Delays
  • Feeding Tubes

…Among many, many others

While a traditional family office is restricted by time and the equipment on hand, our pediatric dental facility is designed in a way that accommodates a greater level of flexibility. From the amount of space — for strollers or wheelchairs — to how our appointments are scheduled, your visit with us should be one that’s enjoyable for everyone.

Special Needs Dentistry: Why Routine Care is Important

We know that being a special needs parent is sometimes exhausting. The number of specialty visits, therapy appointments, or other services tend to fill up the calendar in the blink of an eye. While some parents feel that dental care is something that might be ok to skip over, the health of your child’s teeth and gums can significantly impact their overall level of wellness. In some cases, your child’s special needs may make them even more prone to dental problems or emergencies.

By seeing your child on a regular basis, we can take steps to intercept developing oral conditions that have the potential to cause bigger problems later on. Issues like abscessed teeth, broken teeth, bleeding gums, or rampant tooth decay can often be avoided.

Our team will show you modified ways to help your child limit his or her susceptibility of developing common oral problems seen in children with special needs.
